Steven Soderbergh’s remake of Andrei Tarkovsky’s SOLARIS is probably one of my 10 favorite films. Unfortunately, the film didn’t achieve commercial appeal because of its heavy use of avant garde tones within a sci-fi narrative. Starring George Clooney and Natascha McElhone, SOLARIS (2002) explores the fine line between love and memory in an existential tale about a psychologist who boards a space station that has been abandoned due to an unexplained anamoly. The newly discovered planet that the space station is orbiting seems to have the ability to read into the deepest memories, fears, and emotions of the crew…causing fully real appearances of apparitions from their own minds to walk the halls of the ship with them.

Here’s a clip. It is what I believe to be one of the most beautiful sequences ever formed on screen.
