The Fog, The Ocean

August 12, 2009

I’ve been on a waterfront retreat for the past week.

It’s been a pleasant experience having all seasons come into one.

We don’t get much of that in the eastern ends of the city.

I’ll let the fog horns blow while the lights go out.

You desperate little town.

August 10, 2009

It’s hard to find a perfect redesign for mid-century modern furniture, and when it comes to lighting, it doesn’t get much easier.

While a lot of companies have their own modern approach, the Surveyor/Photographer tripod-style lamp has mostly lost it’s antique character.

Companies like Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn, and Restoration Hardware (I love this one anyways) come close, but ultimately, It’s just best to find the real thing.

But how? Where?

They find the goodies, so you don’t have to.

The lamp above is the real deal circa 1930’s, and it’s for sale in San Francisco from Robollo Home.

Lights, camera, action.

The Burger: Umami

August 10, 2009

I’ve lived around the corner from Umami Burger for as long as it’s been in business.

I finally decided to try it the other night and I’m astonished that it took me so long to find out how amazing it is.

Father’s Office is my favorite burger on the west side of LA and I didn’t think that anything else could come near it in taste/quality.

Wrong.

Umami’s burgers are just as sensational, yet they have far more choices than Father’s.

Why settle for one way to clog your arteries when you can get a variety?

Here’s the menu. Simple. Clean. U-mami.

Endorsement: Pulse Concept by Teague

August 7, 2009

Design firm, Teague, has a concept out for their version of how Tron’s Light Cycles could be a way of the future.

Although it doesn’t exist yet, I endorse this technology as a way for urban cyclists to be seen/scene.

The system comes equipped with LED piping, lit handlebars and pedals, and turn signals.

Let’s get it done. Queue rich swedish buyer, now.

Every time I visit, it’s a must.

By far my favorite choice for breakfast, coffee, and baked goods.

If you get a chance, try the famous bread pudding. It will knock your socks off.

Endorsement: West Elm Pin-Tuck Duvet Cover

August 5, 2009

The West Elm Pin-Tuck duvet cover in white is a nice addition to the modern bedroom.

It brightens the room by about 3 stops of light and the simple pin-tuck design adds a nice bit of texture to a grown man’s bed, without giving off a sense of being too girly.

Don’t be scared, guys. Get in touch with how your bedroom looks.

She’ll thank you for it.

(I own one. Therefore I know.)

New Album: The Dodos – “Time to Die”

August 5, 2009

The two-piece folk/afro/country-blues union of Meric Long and Logan Kroeger have returned with their third full-length album, Time to Die. The Dodo’s are based in San Francisco, where indie rock, post-punk and folk are progressively becoming more dominant. But, what makes The Dodos stand out is how hard it is to pin them into one genre. With extensive classic training and modern appeal, the duo seems to blossom with bigger sounds as each album releases. Time to Die is more polished than the older two albums, but it still says, “Dodos”. There aren’t as many grand blood-rush solos or spinning rabbit holes of intense drumming found in the new work, but Meric’s voice is still quite blissful and very to-the-point.

It’s a Natural Thing

August 4, 2009

Today’s photography carries a familiar tune. It rings from mid-century counter-culture and is now dubbed, “independent”. You see it in Urban Outfitters catalogues, indie films, music magazines, and of course…all over Flickr

And to be clear, I’m not hating on it, despite it getting carried away as a trend. I happen to love what people are doing with film stock and high-end digitals for this genre of photography. The aura of low contrast and haze paired with a sharp picture. The straight-faced and naturally beautiful models wearing classic designs in front of some lush forest or seaside rocks. It’s organic, natural, and simply better than photos of starving heroin addicts.

We’ve all seen what I’ve described above. Now check out what Daniel Weisser is doing with it in his Diptychs set on Flickr. Separating the foreground and background: so fresh and so clean.

Endorsement: Eames Lounge and Ottoman

August 4, 2009

Originally designed by the Eames brothers in the mid-1950’s, the Lounge & Ottoman is still a striking contribution to the modern den.

Like a classic porsche or a rare wine, this item will have to be well earned with age.

So, dust off the old Iliad and take a seat, but you’ll most definitely fall asleep just seconds after sinking into this soft leather cocoon
